AREVA in Talks for EPR Reactor Deal in Ohio

http://www.bulletins-electroniques.com/actualites/59801.htm

AREVA, Duke Energy, and UniStar Nuclear Energy have just announced they are in talks to build an EPR reactor on the first industrial site dedicated to clean energies in the United States. The selected site covering about 3,700 acres and belonging to the US Department of Energy (DoE) is located in Piketon, Ohio. It will be developed as part of an alliance including Duke Energy, AREVA, UniStar Nuclear Energy, USEC Inc., and the Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative.

The new project will be managed by Duke Energy, the contracting authority that will submit the license requests to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), under its own name. UniStar Nuclear Energy will provide its services and expertise during the pre-certification process. It also expressed an interest in acquiring shares in the future nuclear power plant. AREVA will be coordinating the technical analyses for the preparation of the documents required for the building permit application, and later for the reactor license, which will be examined by the NRC, i.e., the US nuclear safety authority.

The US EPR is being certified in the United States. Actually, five US electric utilities (Constellation, PPL, Ameren, Amarillo Power, and AEHI) have opted for the EPR for their future construction projects. "Thanks to its new generation technology, the EPR reactor can supply more than one million homes with reliable electricity without emitting any greenhouse gases. It is the answer to the United States' growing need for electricity and the country's desire to lower its carbon emissions," stated AREVA Board Director Anne Lauvergeon.
