Le 2 avril 2008, le service "Europe et relations internationales" de l'Agence autrichienne de soutien à la recherche appliquée (FFG) a honoré l'ensemble des nouveaux coordinateurs de projets sélectionnés lors des deux premiers appels du 7ème PCRD. La FFG organisera dorénavant des manifestations similaires deux fois par an pour valoriser l'excellence européenne des scientifiques "rouge-blanc-rouge" (Autrichiens) et témoigner à ces scientifiques une part de reconnaissance nationale.
Plus globalement, le ministère autrichien de la Science et de la recherche (BMWF) suit à la loupe, par l'intermédiaire du projet PROVISO [1], l'implication des chercheurs du pays dans le 7ème PCRD. En avril 2008, le bilan de la première année du 7ème PCRD, modulo le succès des négociations des contrats avec la Commission européenne et des quelques appels d'offres dont les résultats ne sont pas encore connus, était le suivant : l'Autriche totalise 2,6% des participations, soit 513, et occupe la 10ème place de l'UE-27 (3ème pour la France). Elle est engagée dans 12,6% des projets, soit 369. Les Autrichiens représentent 4% des coordinateurs à la 9ème place de l'UE (4ème pour la France et 10% des coordinateurs). Ce chiffre est en nette progression par rapport au 6ème PCRD où l'Autriche a coordonné 3,3% des projets. Le pays est en outre particulièrement bien représenté dans les parties "ESPACE" et "INCO" du 7ème PCRD en participant à 55,6% respectivement 33,3% des actions. Cependant l'essentiel des participants Autrichiens, 44%, est impliqué dans les lignes "ICT" et "HEALTH" et à lui seul le Land de Vienne accueille presque la moitié des participations autrichiennes. Enfin, au palmarès du nombre de participations par organisation, les universités technologiques de Vienne et de Graz se distinguent en se positionnant aux deux premières places avec respectivement 42 et 19 participations alors que l'université de Vienne -quatre fois plus d'étudiants que l'université technologique de Vienne- figure au 6ème rang et comptabilise 15 participations.
Les informations détaillées sur les projets à coordination autrichienne sont parfois indisponibles car les consortiums peuvent encore être en train de négocier avec la Commission européenne les aspects financiers et scientifiques de leur projet.
