Geothermal energy is renewable and nonpolluting, it can be harnessed to heat and cool buildings, and in very special locations, such as the volcanic islands of French overseas départements, to produce electricity. Geothermal energy is also expected to help reach the goal of the Grenelle on the Environment forum. Experts estimate that by 2020 geothermal energy will be contributing more than one million toe (ton of oil equivalent) to the very bold goal of producing another 20 million toe of renewable energy, set by the Forum. The areas slated for the highest growth are geothermal heat pumps for (new and renovated) homes, the service sector and public buildings as well as heat networks powered by deep geothermal energy. For instance, in the French overseas départements geothermal energy may be providing more than 25% of consumed electricity in 2020.
Prime Minister François Fillon and State Minister, Minister for the Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development, and Spatial Planning Jean-Louis Borloo and State Secretary in charge of Ecology Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet attended the signing of the important agreement during the inauguration of the scientific pilot facility producing geothermal electricity at Soultz-sous-Forêts (Bas-Rhin).
ADEME and BRGM intend to broaden their action and meet the challenge of fast-growing geothermal energy. The object is to develop a qualified and skilled professional network, with several thousand jobs. However development will require increasing research and innovation, building public awareness, disseminating information, and structuring professional networks through training and quality policies. ADEME and BRGM have committed to harnessing their skills, expertise and financial resources for all these fields of action.
