The satellite event at EuroBio 2008, the second international Symposium on Biomanufacturing, which will be held next October 6 at the Evry Genocentre, will focus on Productivity and Operational Excellence in Biomanufacturing. The first symposium in 2006 called 'New Outlooks for GMP Biomanufacturing' hosted some 250 participants. This year, the main topic of the different talks will be the opportunities for lowering biomolecule manufacturing costs. For instance, lowering the cost of treatments based on monoclonal antibodies, which are the most promising cancer fighting solutions to date, is imperative if the treatment are to become more affordable for patients.
The first session will be dedicated to the feasible means of action to foster improved biomanufacturing performance (actions of cloning conditions on cell culture, purification, flow optimization, transversal and downstream processing, and so on). Three other subjects will also be addressed, i.e., innovative technologies, changing GMP regulation, white and green biotechnologies.
At the Symposium, LEEM President Christian Lajoux and Genopole CEO Pierre Tambourin will present the results of the study "Biomanufacturing in 2008 - Improving the attractiveness of French biomanufacturing" that they commissioned. The document outlines the growth outlooks for the world biopharmaceutical market, takes stock of biological molecules under clinical develop per therapeutic category, reports on biomanufacturing facility locations in Europe and the rest of the world, and ranks the decision criteria for setting up the facilities. The study puts forward concrete recommendations to develop France's appeal for the biomanufacturing of commercial industrial batches.
October 6, 2008 is also a red-letter date because it is when the largest Biomanufacturing Center in France, ranked among Europe's top ten, will be inaugurated. Its creation was announced at the first International Symposium. Aside from the center that will be biomanufacturing therapeutic proteins and that is scheduled to become operational at the end of 2008, 7 other manufacturing projects are underway or being studied at the site, specifically a GMP manufacturing unit of viral vectors and a center manufacturing innovative enzymes and enzymes for bio-catalysis.
