The Ecole Centrale Paris and Supélec have decided to create the Systems Sciences and Energy Challenges teaching and research Chair in partnership with the European Foundation for Tomorrow's Energies launched by EDF (electric utilities) in 2008. Planned for an initial period of 5 years, the Chair - marking a new step in the relationship that EDF has been enjoying with the two schools for several years - will be developing its activities in two main directions. One direction involves training and project activities for students from both schools throughout the curricula taught by Central Paris and Supélec. The focus will be on the International Nuclear Energy Master involving both schools, which got underway at the start of the 2009 academic year . The other direction will include research and innovation activities, with subjects mainly covering complex systems applied to the field of energy (modeling, complex system analysis and design, and the management of human- related uncertainties).
The Systems Sciences and Energy Challenges Chair will involve three professors: a senior professor who will be Chair Manager and who gives lectures at both schools, two junior professors at Centrale Paris and Supélec, and and number of doctoral students. As part of their synergy, both Centrale Paris and Supélec intend to strengthen their presence in the energy sector. For this purpose, in early September, they set up an Energy option in the third year of the engineering program. "This first joint Chair perfectly illustrates what Centrale Paris and Supélec want to build together: an alliance bringing innovative solutions to the major, increasingly complex problems of the twenty-first century," said Centrale Paris Director Hervé Biausser and Supélec Managing Director Alain Bravo. To achieve this, both schools use systems science, an area where the two schools have recognized skills and expertise.
