In early 2009, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT, created by the European Commission) issued a call for proposals for the formation of the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) on the issues of 'Climate Change', 'Sustainable Energies,' and 'Tomorrow's Information and Communication Society'. EIT's main target is to hone Europe's competitive edge through better integration of the stakeholders involved in what is called the 'knowledge triangle', i.e., 'higher education', 'research' and 'innovation'. EIT recognizes that 80% of new developments in key economic sectors of Europe are based on advances in ICT.
Last August, the ICT Labs project was submitted for the call for proposals on 'Tomorrow's Information and Communication Society'. The ICT Labs project is based on five major geographic locations (Berlin, Eindhoven, Helsinki, Paris and Stockholm), the backbone of a future world-class innovation network, knitting together stakeholders in education research and innovation, in other words universities, research organizations, engineering schools, industry operators and incubators. It has planned for the creation of a durable European ecosystem conducive to research result commercialization and business creations. EIT selected this project last December, with a view to turning Europe into the world leader of innovation in digital science and technology.
In France, ICT Labs involves 7 partners located at the Paris-Saclay site (INRIA, Alcatel-Lucent, France Télécom-Orange, Thomson, Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6 University, Paris-Sud 11 University and Institut Télécom). The seven partners will be enjoying the attractive assets of two Ile-de-France competitive clusters, Cap Digital and System@tic, and of a leading research center, Digiteo dedicated to complex and embedded systems. Two world-class competitive clusters, Images and Réseaux et Solutions Communicantes Sécurisées (SCS) partnered with Rennes 1 and Nice Sophia-Antipolis Universities will be enhancing France's involvement in the project.
