EndoStem, bringing together 14 European partners, is a collaborative project of the Seventh Framework program, and is coordinated by David Sassoon INSERM Research Director and Director of the UMR 787 Myology Group (Inserm/UPMC/Association Institut de Myologie). The project is working on developing therapeutics that will benefit patients with muscular pathologies, in the coming years. EndoStem will be encouraging the development of strategies combining the skeletal muscle, vessels, immune system and stem cells, to repair damaged muscle tissue directly. The project will make it possible to use stem cells as a treatment for muscular dystrophy and other rare diseases, among others.
The most advanced candidate molecules are already undergoing clinical trials. However, in 18 months, two new tests have been scheduled with new pharmacological compounds. While the repair of muscle and blood tissue is the initial target of project research, its impact could also be used as a basis for treating any degenerative disease or tissue damage (degeneration linked to age, occupational diseases, or sports injuries).
